Pathways to Specialisation
International Recognition Route
The College may allow veterinarians to sit the ECVM examination without completing a residency, when they are judged to be internationally recognised in the College's field by the ECVM Executive Committee. Candidates are assessed on their qualifications, level of international recognition and capacity to contribute to the growth of the College and the training of residents.
Eligibility
Experience
10 Years Minimum
At least 10 years of research and/or practical experience in veterinary microbiology, with a minimum of 60% of that time working in the speciality.
Expertise
Equivalent Standard
Must demonstrate capacity and expertise equivalent to, or exceeding, a candidate approved to sit the examination after an approved residency.
Commitment
Resident Training
Must demonstrate intention and capacity to support the growth of the College by contributing to the training of residents and providing administrative support.
Applicants must be working in a setting that provides access to facilities of a sufficient standard to allow the practice of the speciality at an appropriate level. Applicants should not have followed an approved residency programme.

The following must be submitted to the ECVM Secretary at the time of application.

Curriculum Vitae
Full professional career from university onwards.

Published Papers
Complete list in CV. At least 10 papers relating to the speciality published within the preceding 7 years. Evidence of current activity required. Multi-author papers must include explanation of applicant's role.

Case Reports
2 case reports describing complex cases managed by the applicant in the last 5 years. Published case reports are acceptable.

Case Log
100 cases of a complexity and type similar to that expected of a resident. Must be cases managed during the last 5 years.

Postgraduate Qualifications
Evidence of any relevant postgraduate qualification in a related field.

Covering Letter (3-5 pages)
Career highlights, relevant experience, 5 most significant contributions to the speciality (max 250 words each), and how the applicant intends to contribute to the College and resident training.

No Prior Residency
Applicants must not have followed an approved residency programme.

Time in Speciality
Demonstration that at least 60% of time has been spent working in the speciality during the last 10 years.

Working Environment
Must be working in a setting with facilities of sufficient standard to allow practice of the speciality at an appropriate level.

Referees
List of up to five suggested referees; a minimum of three references will be sought. At least two should be existing Diplomates of speciality colleges where possible.

Letters of Good Standing
From all licensing bodies with which the applicant is licensed to practise.

Applicants from Outside Europe
Will be considered with the additional requirement that two European College Diplomates provide letters of support.
What Referees Are Asked to Assess
Professional, Ethical and Legal Conduct
Referees are asked to comment specifically on the applicant's standards of professional and ethical behaviour.
Specialist and Clinical Abilities
Referees are asked to assess the applicant's level of clinical and specialist expertise in veterinary microbiology.
Contribution to the Veterinary Speciality
Referees are asked to comment on the applicant's contribution to the advancement of veterinary microbiology.
