Dr. Erik van EngelenEBVS Specialist in Veterinary Microbiology
MSc in Biology Wageningen University, DVM Utrecht University, bovine practitioner, lecturer in physiology at the Veterinary Faculty, PhD in physiology of reproduction, I am since 2008 employed as Senior Scientist bacteriology at the Research and Development department of Royal GD, one of the large veterinary laboratories in the world with nearly five million lab-analysis each year. In this function, together with another colleague, I am responsible for the quality of bacteriological cultures, 250.000 samples annually. Besides that, I am responsible for development and implementation of new innovative procedures in veterinary microbiology and especially bacteriology, and for the execution of large projects for clients like the government or industry with regards to the diagnosis of infectious animal diseases in The Netherlands. This results in reports to the clients and, if possible in publications in scientific journals. I am employed for 38 hours per week, and up to 100% of my time is focused on veterinary microbiology. This includes:
1. Attend several national and international congresses each year and have oral or poster presentations if possible.
2. Give lectures to veterinarians in the Netherlands and other parts of the world with regards to veterinary microbiology.
3. Be member of the animal welfare institute that decides about proper use of animals for infectious disease experiments.
4. Involved in accreditation, GLP-studies and quality control in the laboratory.
5. Technical responsible for veterinary microbiology in national and international studies, analyze the results and write scientific reports.
6. Publish in scientific journals.
